You’ll need to learn how to properly get over mistakes and failures, how to think outside the box and take chances and how to summon the urge to work even when you’re dead tired (and more). Honestly most people are ill equipped, in the beginning, for exactly what they have decided to take on.
There are a multitude of ways to approach self improvement and understandably there is only so much a person can do at any given time. If you see an issue that can be beneficial if you work on it, then by all means, explore it and see what happens.
